You make a really good point – the trekking operator you choose matters. There’s so many out there which makes it hard to choose but I know for a fact that the World Expedition team does a really good job in terms of treating their porters the right way and creating job opportunities for locals. Glad to hear you guys had a great time!! I’m sure this brings back memories :)

We did a group tour and had the experience of a lifetime–we were fortunate to have had such good company. I agree with many of your tips and I would like to add the importance of choosing a responsible touring company. Choosing one was simply overwhelming for us. We chose Llamapath because from our research they appeared treat their porters well. Many tour operators don’t and it was sad to see porters sleeping in the bathrooms because they weren’t equipped with a tent of their own. Just something to think about when searching for a company :)

That’s so great to hear your story! Sounds like you guys had a great time – in terms of altitude you’re right but the weird part is that for us, we acclimatized for a good 4 days which is more than what most people do. Still, we ended up mostly all getting hit with some sort of illness. I wonder if part of it was the food so it’s hard to say. Still, what an amazing experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything else!

I was worried about looking forward to it too much and being disappointed but I needn’t have worried.

Company we went with – Alpaca Expeditions really looked after us. Would definitely recommend.

On altitude sickness, it’s so important to acclimatise. Two people got sick in our group of 8. Both of them had pretty much come straight from sea level to the trek.

Thanks Doreen! You MUST go back at some point…for the third time! Was it rainy season when you went? Hopefully with each visit you’ve been able to explore different parts of the country.

I’ve been to Peru twice and have still not made it to Machu Picchu. the first time, The roads were washed out, so we couldn’t go, and second time, I didn’t have time. Thanks for the tips. I , too, would love a private tour with personalized service as you did for your trek.
