Hey Emily! Thanks for writing and your kind comments :)

This trip in total including flights, lodging, food, local transportation, excursions and other purchases was around $15,000 so not exactly that cheap but at the same time it could’ve been much worse considering I used a lot of hotel points and airline points to cover a lot of the costs. That being said I also didn’t go on the SUPER CHEAP throughout so I could’ve definitely gone more backpacker style but when you reach my age you can’t do it that way all the time.

I think the numbers are also skewed a little because of Japan and Palau – the two most expensive places on the trip. Palau pretty much tacked on another $3000 right away and Japan itself is well…Japan.

From a daily perspective I can’t give you exact figures because I never tried to calculate it myself but my guesstimates would be as follows:

Keep in mind this includes hotel, food, excursions averaged out by day. No flights included.
Hong Kong: $100-150 (hotels are very expensive)
Indonesia: $50-$80 (or more if you splurge on a resort in Bali)
Singapore: $100 (most expensive country in SE Asia)
Cambodia: $50-100 (really depends on the tour you do for Angkor Wat)
Thailand: $50-$80 (food is dirt cheap and excursions can be cheap or expensive depending on quality and of course hotels could go either way)
China: $60-$90 (This is just thinking about Shanghai and if you did a hostel)
Taiwan: $60-100 (Food is cheap, hotels may not be)
Palau: $250-300 (But this includes accommodation, transportation and most importantly the diving which is what makes it expensive)
Japan: $150-200 (I’m sure there are ways to really go budget but relatively speaking Japan is definitely up there. Factor in the JR pass + expensive food + expensive hotels.

Hope that helps!

I’m really curious–how much did this trip cost you? What was the average cost per day in each country?
