Hi Christine, in general I’d say booking directly through car rental companies because you’ll have direct contact with them but it never hurts to shop around as sometimes you can find oddly good deals on platforms like Priceline. In your specific example, $200 with Avis seems to be the cheapest so I’d probably go with them!

They’ve definitely clamped down on this although it may not be consistent across all locations that they’ll check. There’s some inherent risk in using these codes if you don’t have the ID or Amex Plat in this case to back it up. I’d recommend having a back up booking in case!

Hey April, thank you so much for chiming in. I’ve been hearing the same about companies checking ID more often than not this year.

Glad to hear that things worked out with the glitch. I know everyone has different experiences when it comes to agents especially when the lines are so long nowadays.

Also, great tip about the pre-paying. Does the agent mean that the company will charge pre-pay and then charge again on top by accident? That’s so crazy that this happens. I rarely ever pre-pay because of the flexibility but that is definitely shady on the car rental companies!

1. On return, state clearly that that car was prepaid and ask that it be clearly marked on the return slip (especially with quick returns).

2. Check your billing statements.

I can tell you and your readers that car rental companies are asking for proof of discount use for corporate codes more frequently than they used to because of the current rental car shortage (which is also driving up rates). I watched it happen to a guy in front of me in line at budget who was denied access to typical Fastbreak service to validate the code. I was talking to the agent, and the agent was happy to share a number of stories swapped between agencies on the major increase of “discount abuse” as they called it.

Here is something I didn’t know that I’d like to share.

My own reservation had a glitch. So what I had on paper did not match what was on the computer. How, I have no clue! But the only way to resolve it was the start over. This drove rates WAY up. After I got over that shock, the agent informed me they have access to special “walk in” packages. This dropped my rate back down to below the original amount, waived the one -way fee and included insurance.

I was just friendly and nice and understanding of the fact that that the glitch was not the agents fault. So the agent did everything he could to help. He really, really helped and even extended my return time by a few hours that I ended up needing.

I had to remove them unfortunately! I’d recommend that you check out the other car rental companies for good car rental codes.

Thanks for the Desjardins code. I’ve added it to the list! I am pretty sure they wouldn’t check. Your best bet is to try it on an upcoming trip and have a back up rental booking somewhere else in case.

Has anyone used this before who isn’t a Desjardin card holder? I’m not seeing anywhere where it states you would need to make the purchase with that card – simply just being a card holder gets you that discount.

Has anyone ever had any problems using discounts offered by credit cards when they aren’t a credit card holder of that type?

Yes, C302100 with Avis is a corporate code with Bombardier but I will say that it’s a riskier code to use since they often do check for ID since it’s a really good discount.

All of the Enterprise codes will work in the DC area. It’s just a matter of trying them and seeing which gives you the best offer based on your car class and dates.
